While most people wouldn’t hesitate to get a cavity filled, they consider options such as veneers to be non-necessity. But veneers can do more than just brighten your smile, although that’s certainly an important function! These days, porcelain veneers — thin shells that adhere to your natural teeth — can also replace more complicated, lengthy dental treatments.
Of course, it’s important to get a consultation so you can be certain which dental option is the right one for your specific circumstances. But here are just a few circumstances for which porcelain veneers may be the answer:
Brighten your smile. This is probably the most well-known application of porcelain veneers, and for good reason. Many people have stained or discolored teeth that ordinary whitening measures, even professional ones, can’t correct. Veneers will restore the whiteness that genetics, medications, or simply time have taken from you. The advantage of the porcelain version is that dentists can match your natural shade, avoiding an artificial-looking hue.
Fix chipped teeth. A missing part of your tooth isn’t just a cosmetic issue. Much like a cracked windshield, a small chip can eventually turn into a deeper crack that can cause pain or even tooth loss. A porcelain veneer, on the other hand, not only covers the chip but acts as a bonding agent to strengthen the entire tooth. This action allows you to not only feel more secure about your appearance but to rest easy knowing that the damage won’t spread.
Replace the need for braces. Some patients are surprised to find that veneers can be an alternative to adult orthodontia in many cases, potentially saving them months or even years. While problems like a severe overbite often require orthodontia, challenges such as spaces between teeth can be corrected with porcelain veneers.
Correct shape issues. Sometimes Mother Nature gives us that one tooth that stands out from the others, whether it’s because the bottom edges aren’t even, or because one or two are narrower than the others. Some shapes defy the option of just filing here and there. That’s where veneers come in. A porcelain veneer can be specially crafted to match the shape and size of your other teeth.
Compared to treatments such as adult orthodontia, porcelain veneers are easier to place and require far fewer office visits.
The veneer process starts by removing a small amount of enamel from the front and sides of the selected teeth, then making a mold of those teeth. Once the veneers are prepared from the molds, they are bonded to your teeth.
Of course, they’re also a faster alternative to orthodontia for problems such as noticeable gaps. At the same time, they provide long-lasting results, meaning that your investment can last more than ten years.
